Putting It All Together: Formatting Your Bibliography

Whether you have used MLA and will create a Works Cited page, or APA and will create a Reference List , there are certain rules of formatting to follow when formatting your bibliography. A few general rules of thumb:

Your Works Cited page or Reference List should:

  • be on a separate page, at the end of your work

  • have a title

    • For MLA: Works Cited, centered on the page

    • For APA: References centered on the page, in bold.

  • have all entries arranged in alphabetical order, and aligned with the left margin.

  • use a hanging indent for any entries with more than one line of text (second line of text indented)

  • be double spaced (but no extra space between entries)
